In Memoriam

Today we had our dog Ellie put down.

She was 14 and 4 months and full of cancer. We had known this was coming for months. When we were in Bishop, CA, we had a cancerous tumor removed from Ellie’s mouth. The vet told us it was only a matter of time before the cancer spread throughout her body.

We will miss her.

We rescued Ellie from our Green Bay Vet. Because of a divorce, Ellie had been wasting away at the vet’s office for several months. We used to take Jack, our former Golden Retreiver, to the Doggie Day Care at the vet, and we’d pass by Ellie each time we brought Jack. Ellie looked very sad.

We inquired about adopting her and on September 28, 2008 we took her home. Both Ellie and Jack were standoffish at first, but quickly became fast friends. Soon they watched out for each other when we took them to Doggie Day Care.

I didn’t like Ellie at first. She wasn’t as pretty as our show dog Jack and was not as overtly friendly as Jack either.

And then one night she sat on the couch right next to me — just like a person would. I started teasing her and she responded in kind. That was that.

This is our fourth pet that we’ve had to put down. It doesn’t get any easier, and I think that’s good.

Let us share way too many photos . . .

I know how difficult it is to lose your best furry friend. Retrievers are so everlastingly sweet and faithful and you wonder how you ever got along without them. Sorry you have lost that sweet friend. I am sure you feel the loss. I know how I felt when our Casey had to be put down. Kath

    • I loved Casey. I’m sure you remember when I had lunch at your house when I went to high school. Remember those wonderful piano serenades I gave you? You were so polite.

But the high point of those lunches was petting Casey — one of the mellowest dogs I’ve met.

I am so sorry to hear about Ellie. But you did the right thing for her. You were able to take her to a better place with no pain where she can run free as the wind. Over to the Rainbow Bridge. No matter how many dogs you end up having and then euthanizing, it never gets easier. Each time they take a piece of your heart with them. You gave that girl an awesome life, be proud of that. Hugs to you both and a scritch on the head for Flirt. Again, I am so sorry.

My sympathies Tom & Jan. Putting down a pet is a horrible experience.

Glad you have Flirt to help keep you busy. While it’s sad to let your dog go you know you have to help ease her pain. Was nice to see all the pictures; I remember a lot of them especially the ones with Flirt as a puppy.

So sorry to hear about Ellie. Never met her but I can see how much she meant to you. Goldens, in general, have to be one of the sweetest breeds in existence. A dog is so much more than a pet…they become a companion whose uniqueness we can never replace and who add so much richness and depth to our lives. You are truly blessed to have found Ellie and spent many years with her.

    • I remember when Jan & I came to your house in 2002 (?). At the time your dog (a poodle?) was very sick and you were feeding hand-feeding it chicken with apparently great success.

You’re right. After being diagnosed with cancer, Scout lived another two years. And the chicken recipe was Kentucky Fried Chicken : ) It really helped to keep his weight up. Rose wanted a dog that she could choose, so about three years ago we got our current dog, Lucky, who is a Golden Doodle. He’s incredible. They’re like siblings together. She’s really going to miss him when she goes off to college next year, although she’ll be staying in the state–so–not too bad. Maybe one of these years Deb and I will mosey on down your way for a visit.
