Jeepin’ to Crystal Mountain

Crystals_07_pano

Crystal Mountain Panorama (Click on the photo to enlarge) Our vehicles are on the far right.

On Monday morning several Crazy Horse residents (myself included) in three Jeeps and one Razor spend a half day in the desert. Our destination was “Crystal Mountain” — actually a spot along a power line mountain road where quartz crystals litter the hills.

We left at about 8:30 am and returned at 2:30 pm. It was one of the dustiest, bone-jarring rides of my life — I loved it. Anxious moments — getting too close to a tree and hitting a rock wall while navigating a narrow wash. I only hit the rock at about 5 mph, but it stopped the Jeep cold. Only damage was a scratched bumper.

Almost everyone in our group had years of experience driving in the desert, so I relied on them for navigating. There are no roads out there and GPS is pretty useless. Since our Jeeps (and the Razor) can kick up a lot of dust, it’s easy to lose track of the vehicle you’re following . . . and likewise easy to get lost out there.

One guy waited for me at a fork in the trail and signaled me when I took the wrong trail. Whew. If it wasn’t for him, I might still be out there driving around. Thanks Steve.

Brunch in Haulapai

Haulapai Area

Haulapai Area (Click on photo to enlarge)

Last Sunday we went with some friends from Crazy Horse to Haulapai Mountain Park just outside of Kingman, AZ.

The couple had spent a couple of summers camping in the park campground and loved it because the park is cool even during hot Arizona summers — and the views are stellar.

Plus, there is a small resort and restaurant nearby that serves brunch on Sundays.

An attraction of the restaurant are the elk that stop and visit. We only saw one, but often several stop by at a time.

TOP STATE PARKS

Using the state park data I gathered a while back, I created a graphic that lists the most popular state park for each state:

IN OTHER NEWS . . .

We’ve had the air conditioning off for almost a week. Just basking in 70/80-degree temps and low humidity. Sweet.

IJSBA Jettribe World Finals

ISJBA2014_logo

The 2014 International Jet Sports Boating Association (IJSBA) held its annual jet boat finals at the Crazy Horse Campground from October 4th through the 12th. Here’s a summary of the event.

It was loud. It was fun.

The only downsides were that we couldn’t take Flirt to the beach and the crazies who drove down our street every day (and night) at Mach 5 in their ATVs, dune buggies, etc. Besides that, it was definitely a photo op.

Here are some “before” and “after” photos of the campground:
